Gateway
The technical meaning is a hardware or software set-up that translates between two dissimilar protocols, for example Prodigy has a gateway that translates between its internal, proprietary e-mail format and Internet e-mail format. Another, sloppier meaning of gateway is to describe any mechanism for providing access to another system, e.g. AOL might be called a gateway to the Internet. A machine that exists on two networks, such as the Internet and BITNET, and that can transfer mail between them. Hardware or software that bridges the gap between two otherwise incompatible applications or networks so that data can be transferred among different computers.

Gb - Gigabyte
One thousand megabytes, or approximately one billion seventy million bytes (actually 1,024 megabytes).

Generic Top Level Domain
A top level domain name that is open to registrants around the world in contrast to country code top level domains that are often restricted to registrants located in a particular country or region. .com, .net and .org are all considered to be generic top level domains.

GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
A common format for image files, especially suitable for images containing large areas of the same color. GIF format files of simple images are often smaller than the same file would be if stored in JPEG format, but GIF format does not store photographic images as well as JPEG. GIF files are limited to 256 colors, but allow for animaited images.

Gigabit Ethernet
A networking technology in which data is transmitted at one gigabit per second. The new Gigabit Ethernet interface is over standard copper cable (CAT 5) and is an IEEE 802.3u standard. The interface also supports automatic speed selection between 10, 100 and 1000 Mbit/sec (Mbps).

Glue Record
A glue record is an A record that is created as part of a delegation. If a zone is delegated to a name server whose hostname is a Descendant of that particular zone, then a glue record for that hostname must be included in the delegation.

A WYSIWYG html editor and much more. Created by Adobe. Very similar to Dreamweaver and FrontPage. Golive can create many different code types and save as different file types.

Graphics
Also called images. Stored in formats such as GIF, JPG, BMP, etc.

Guestbook
An area on a website where visitors can leave comments for the webmaster or for others that visit the site to see. Has become a popular method for web spammers to create link farms.

GUI - Graphical User Interface
A graphical method of controlling how a user interacts with a computer to perform various tasks. Instead of issuing commands at a prompt, the user performs desired tasks by using a mouse to choose from `a dashboard' of options presented on the display screen. These are in the form of pictorial buttons (icons) and lists. Some GUI tools are dynamic and the user must manipulate a graphical object on the screen to invoke a function; for example, moving a slider bar to set a parameter value such as the scale of a map.
